つくる人間が、直す店をひらいた理由
はじまりは、具体的な環境問題への意識ではありませんでした。漠然とした違和感はあったと思います。ただ、当時それを言葉にできる解像度は「かっこよくない」でした。数シーズンで役目を終えたことにされ、まだ十分に履ける靴が捨てられていく。その在り方が、どうにも美しくないと思っていました。
英国・ノーザンプトンで靴づくりを学び、帰国後は修理職人として働きながら、2007年に自分のブランドをはじめました。つくる側と直す側、その両方の作業台に立つとよくわかります。靴の一生は売れた瞬間に終わるのではなく、そこから始まる。履かれ方と手入れ、そして直され方まで含めて設計しなければ、その一足は長く生きられません。
2010年、ブランドの店ではなく修理の店として The Shoe of Life をひらきました。以来、6万足を超える靴とバッグをお預かりしています。
あのとき言葉にできなかった違和感は、その後、廃棄される原皮部位を素材に生まれ変わらせる NIBE LEATHER® の開発や、アニマルウェルフェアレザーの取り組み、そしてB Corp認証の取得へとつながっていきました。
使い捨ては合理性です。直すことは人間性です。長く履かれた靴には、新品にはない格好良さがある。ここでの修理は、デザインの続きだと考えています。

私たちは、この地域に暮らすお客様の生活をイメージし、お一人お一人との対話から、その履きなれた靴や使い慣れたバッグにとって、可能な限りベストな状態な補修・保全をご案内することを使命としています。
それら靴やバッグに使われる皮革という素材は、動物の皮膚です。
その動物の皮膚である天然皮革は、お手入れをすることでとても長く使用することが出来ます。
使う事によって良くなっていく素材は、天然皮革以外にはあり得えません。
その様な天然皮革を身に付け、お手入れをし、丁寧に使用することは、この都市生活を物質的にも精神的にも満たしてくれます。

Why a shoemaker opened a repair shop
It did not begin with a specific concern for the environment. There was a vague unease, I think. But the only words I had for it at the time were: it isn't cool. Shoes still perfectly wearable, declared finished after a season or two and thrown away — I simply found that way of things inelegant.
I studied shoemaking in Northampton, England, and after returning to Japan I worked as a repair craftsman while starting my own label in 2007. Standing at both benches, making and mending, one thing becomes obvious: the life of a shoe does not end when it is sold. It begins there. Unless it is designed for how it will be worn, cared for and repaired, a pair cannot live long.
In 2010 I opened The Shoe of Life, not as a brand store but as a repair shop. Since then we have looked after more than 60,000 pairs of shoes and bags.
The unease I could not put into words back then later became NIBE LEATHER®, a material made from hide parts that would otherwise be discarded, our animal welfare leather project, and our B Corp certification.
Disposability is efficiency. Repair is humanity. A shoe worn for years has a beauty a new one cannot have. Repair here is a continuation of design.

Even though your shoes may be made by mass-production, it must be your important personal shoes.

Materials used in your shoes & bags are animal skins. These natural leathers can be used very long time by maintaining well. Also natural leathers are only materials to get better by using it.
